Honey Total Activity (TA)

What is Total Activity in Honey?

Total Activity (TA) is basically a bacterial and fungal killing scale. The greater the TA rating, the more bacteria and fungus the honey can potentially kill. TA ratings greater than TA10 generally deliver beneficial properties, while values of TA30 and above hold exceptional antibacterial and health properties.

How is TA calculated?

Total Activity (TA) is the sum of two types of naturally occurring antibacterial properties of honey, being Peroxide Activity (PA) and Non Peroxide Activity (NPA).

TA = PA + NPA

But then what is PA and NPA?

Peroxide Activity (PA) is the antimicrobial and antifungal properties that occur from naturally occurring peroxide components in particular honey varieties. Some varieties of honey such as Bella Bees Jarrah, Bella Bees Marri (Red Gum) and Bella Bees Eucalyptus, naturally contain greater amounts of these components mainly due to the trees that the bees collect nectar from. The Activity is produced from a bee enzyme (Glucose Oxidase) that naturally form peroxide compounds in honey.

Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA) is the antimicrobial and antifungal properties that occur from naturally occurring, beneficial chemical components in particular honey varieties, but does not include the peroxide components mentioned above. Some varieties of honey such as Bella Bees Jarrah, Bella Bees Marri (Red Gum) and Bella Bees Eucalyptus, naturally contain greater amounts of these components mainly due to the trees that the bees collect nectar from.

Do all honeys have a TA rating?

TA active honey is generally pure, raw and natural honey such as Bella Bees Jarrah, Bella Bees Marri (Red Gum) and Bella Bees Eucalyptus. These honey varieties naturally contain greater amounts of TA active components mainly due to the trees that the bees collect nectar from.

How is TA tested?

The Total Activity (TA) of Bella Bees Jarrah, Bella Bees Marri (Red Gum) and Bella Bees Eucalyptus honey is measured by the Well Diffusion Phenol Equivalent test (WDPE), an analytical method developed in New Zealand in the 1990’s to measure the Activity of Manuka honey. Bella Bees Honey is tested at the independent ChemCenter laboratory  in Perth, Western Australia for analysis.

Bella Bees Active Honey

Traditionally, honey has been used to heal small wounds and minor burns, soothe sore throats, prevent tooth decay and improve digestive issues. Lately, there has been more and more interest given to the healing properties of pure, raw and natural Western Australian honey, due to its increased medicinal potential.

Unfortunately, much of the commercial honey available in supermarkets today is processed and heat-treated, which effectively reduces the anti-microbial properties and health benefits of honey.

Bella Bees Honey is only coarse strained to remove any larger chunks of the honeycomb. Our honey is never heat-treated or fine filtered, and for this reason it retains much of its natural goodness such as vitamins, minerals, trace pollens, propolis particles, fine comb particles, anti-microbial properties and antioxidants.
